Frequently Asking Questions About LockSmith Profy Services
We provide the following content as a guide to recurring questions about our locksmithing services.
Keys
A proximity key is the remote FOB that comes with a new car. Proximity keys are also called Keyless Access.
Your most economical and convenient option is to call us. We will come to you, remove the key fragment, and make a replacement high-security, push start, or transponder key.
Master rekeying is modifying all the locks in a building to accept a single key.
No master key fits every lock. Master keys work with a specific series of locks.
Provided a single key will fit into every lock rekeying the locks will make possible the use of one key for every door.
Ask a trustworthy relative or friend to hold onto your extra key so you can call them in the event of a lockout. It would be best if you kept a spare house key in a magnetic holder placed on your car’s frame, behind the front license plates, or behind the bumper. Think carefully before placing the key holder. Experienced thieves know all of the most popular key hiding places.
Avoid classic hiding places like doormats and flower pots. Place an extra key under the doghouse if you have one. You might consider placing a back-up key behind the siding or a thermometer, in a birdhouse, or the dryer vent.
A key stamped with “Do not duplicate” or some variation of that phrase is copyable by a locksmith under specific circumstances. The individual ordering the duplicates have to provide us with a written request on their company letterhead. The request must contain the following information.
- Identifying markings on the key to be reproduced
- The number of copies requested
- The name of the agent who will take delivery of the duplicates
- The name and contact information of the letter’s author
Whoever takes delivery of the copies must complete a Request For Restricted Keys application. Lock Smith Profy retains the authority to refuse to replicate keys marked “Do Not Duplicate.”
In most cases, we can rekey the lock to accommodate a replacement key, a cheaper alternative to replacing locks.
A master key or passkey is a key that fits multiple locks. If you rent and your landlord needs to access your apartment when you are not home, they will use a master key.
Automobile Locksmithing
Jot down your car’s vehicle identification number (VIN) and give us a call. After you give us the VIN and answer a few questions about your vehicle, we can provide you a duplicate key or FOB. A dealership can only program some auto builders’ smart keys.
Rekeying means making a lock work with a new key.
We will contact your car’s manufacturer for a new key code and make you a duplicate key.
How long it takes to make a new auto key depends on the make and model. An hour is the longest you will wait to get back on the road.
On average, our locksmiths can get you back in your vehicle in less than 30 minutes.
A car key replacement is an emergency service. You can get your key replaced and programmed the same day without advance scheduling.
The replacement key made by Locksmith Profy Houston will fit your existing locks, so lock replacement is not needed.
Locksmiths stock duplicate keys for a variety of automobile models. Auto lockout services include key programming.

Before we can open a lock, we need to see proof of ownership of the residence, car, or business. Keys marked “Do Not Duplicate” can be copied with the right documentation. The duplication of a high-security key carries stiff penalties. High-security locks greatly reduce but do not eliminate the risk of a break-in.
Locksmith Profy performs warrantied work at competitive rates. We are experienced professionals offering speedy service and quality components.
You might replace your locks for added security or because of damage to the original lock. A new door lock is needed when the cylinder becomes so worn the key doesn’t work correctly. Some people replace locks after moving into a new place because they don’t know if someone still has a key to the original lock.
The most commonly used locking mechanism consists of pins, tumblers, and a rotating cylinder. There is an upper and lower row of varying length pins that make contact with each other when the key is not in the lock. The upper pins are spring-loaded. The notches in a key vary in length to correspond to a specific pin. Inserting the correct key into the lock and turning rotates the cylinder breaking the contact between the pins to unlock the door.
High-security locks are not impregnable, but they make it a lot harder to enter a property forcibly. If your home contains valuable or irreplaceable items, it is advisable to protect your house’s contents with high-security locks.
High-security locks offer a higher level of protection in three ways. High-security locks are more resistant to burglar’s tools, including lock pick and drills, and more damage-resistant than standard locks. Patent laws and a maximum fine of $10,000 for duplication of keys guards against the illegal duplication of high-security lock keys.
House Lock Outs
In this case, we will call the police. If you claim to have proof of residency inside the residence or office, the responding officer may or may not give us the go-ahead to open the door. Ultimately whether or not we open the lock is up to the officer.
Provided the lockout isn’t the result of a damaged lock, and the locksmith was able to open the lock without drilling it, we can get your door open without creating the need for a new lock.
Some locks take longer to open. On average, you should be inside your home in 10-20 minutes.
Residential lockout assistance is one of the services we provide.
Safes
We will need to see a driver’s license bearing the address of the safe’s location.
- Photo ID and a piece of mail addressed to the company representative at the businesses’ address
- Proof of the representative’s connection to the firm like a business card or their name or likeness on the company website
- A copy of the company’s lease
If the safe is in a private residence, the deed or closing statement serves as proof of legitimate access to the safe.
We can install a new lock on an office safe and make duplicate and replacement keys.
If you need “safe cracking” services, Lock Smith Profy can help you access the contents of your safe or gun storage locker. We will require proof that you have lawful access to the safe.
